HK$1 Billion Crunch Time Instant Relief Fund Phase Two: Retail Industry

Mrs. Annie Yau Tse, Chairman of Hong Kong Retail Management Association

The Government released the latest retail sales figures of September. The total retail sales value was HK$29.8 billion, decreased by 18.3% year-on-year. For the first nine months of 2019, total retail sales value fell by 7.3%.

The Association expects the retail market downtrend will further worsen for the rest of this year. Member companies are pessimistic about the Christmas holiday sales in November and December. Many of them reported that they have started adopting austere measures such as asking their staff to take no paid leave or deferring rent payments.

In the past few months, the Association has been keeping close contact with key stakeholders particularly with the landlords and the Government to discuss plausible strategies for tackling the current crisis.

As high rent is our number one challenge for survival, we have been persistently reflecting the industry’s devastation and relentlessly urging major shopping mall landlords to offer immediate rental relief measures via various channels.

Through these engagements, we aim to promote mutual understanding between landlords and retailers, so that both parties can collaborate with realistic measures to secure survival. In this regard, we would like to encourage members not to lose heart but to maintain a close dialogue with the landlords and proactively negotiate with them for best options in terms of relief measures on an individual basis.

As the social unrest prevails and its impacts on our industry see no end at the moment, the Association needs constantly updated data from members for supporting our ongoing initiatives of urging the landlords for further relief measures.

For this purpose, we are now conducting a survey of the latest impacts on retail and catering businesses anonymously, hoping to cover a wide and representative spectrum of retailers and caterers. If successful, the consolidated survey results would be presented to the Government, major developers and shopping mall operators, as well as other landlords and stakeholders through the media. Please render your kind support by participating in it, and inviting other fellow retailers or caterers in your network to participate.

On the positive side, we are pleased to stage our 2019 HKRMA Annual Awards on 3 December at Kowloon Bay International Trade & Exhibition Centre (KITEC). It will be a time for all retailers and frontline staff to be cheered up and celebrate a year of hard work. The event will give recognitions to winners of our flagship programmes, namely Service & Courtesy Award, and 2019 Service Retailers of the Year. Members are most welcome to attend and share the joy of our winners. For details, please click here.

Facing the current hardships, I would like to encourage all fellow retailers to stay strong both physically and spiritually with positive thinking, and to remain committed to staffs’ and customers’ safety as our top priority.
